M51 - The Whirlpool Galaxy

The Whirlpool Galaxy, also known as M51 or NGC 5194, is one of the most iconic spiral galaxies in the night sky. Located about 23 million light-years away in the constellation Canes Venatici, M51 features well-defined spiral arms and a bright core. These arms are composed of young blue stars and star-forming regions, while the core is dominated by older, yellow stars.
M51 is interacting with a smaller companion galaxy, NGC 5195, which is clearly visible in many images. This gravitational interaction creates density waves in M51's spiral arms, enhancing star formation. This interaction makes M51 a significant object of study for astronomers as it provides insights into galactic evolution through mutual interactions.
