M31 - Andromeda Galaxy
The Andromeda Galaxy (sometimes also known by its old name, the Great Andromeda Nebula, or by the catalogue designations M 31 and NGC 224) is a giant spiral galaxy belonging to the Local Group, together with the Milky Way; it lies about 2.538 million light-years from Earth, in the direction of the northern constellation of Andromeda, from which it takes its name. It is the large spiral galaxy closest to our own: it is even visible to the naked eye, making it the most distant object visible to human eyes without the aid of any observing instrument.
